Logan Field Dedication
Preceding Friday night’s Hermosa Beach Double A Little League game, the visiting Dragons and home team Cypress Park Prowlers lined up along their respective first and third base baselines for an address by league president Jeff Miller.
Miller stood on the newly installed Astroturf infield, facing a large, newly installed scoreboard that read Logan Field. The new infield and scoreboard, Miller told the 8- to 10-year-old players, were made possible through a donation from Todd and Joann Goodwin. The couple, he said, wanted to do something for the thousands of Hermosa Beach Little Leaguers, who, like their son Logan, loved baseball. Plans for the field improvements were announced during the February, 2020 opening day ceremonies, when Logan was described by his former coach, Travis Synder, as an undersized, overachieving ball player who distinguished himself by his hustle.
Logan died April 13, 2017, from an abdominal injury suffered when he hit a tree stump skiing at Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado. He was 12 years old and had been wearing a helmet.Following the league president’s remarks, Todd Goodwin took the mic and said, simply, “Let’s play ball.”Then Logan’s sisters, Alexa and Sienna,, both students at Hermosa Valley School, threw out the first pitches for the first game at Logan Field.
